What is the First Patronage Program (FPP)?

The Kawamura Foundation for the Promotion of Culture and Arts is dedicated to the mission of deeply rooting the concepts of "supporting" and "participating in" the arts within society. In Japan, however, there remains a long road ahead before an environment is established that enables lesser-known craft artisans to sustain their creative work over the long term.
In light of these challenges, and recognizing the need to foster a broader understanding of the "spirit of patronage" in the society of the future, the Foundation launched the "First Patronage Program" in 2017.
This project aims to foster the growth and success of emerging craft artists by creating opportunities to connect them with the general public, while also cultivating the audiences and supporters who will sustain the culture of the next generation.
We aim to move beyond viewing art merely as something to be appreciated, and instead share it across society as something we engage with and support.

Purpose and Mechanism of the First Patronage Program

Launched in 2017, this program is being implemented with a focus on the following points.

(1)To provide makers who have just begun their creative activities in the field of crafts with an opportunity for a "rocket start" that leads to a breakthrough early in their careers.

(2)To foster the sustainable development of cultural creation by expanding the circle of people in society who support creators.

Background and Development of the First Patronage Program

The Foundation believes that establishing an environment where creators can develop and remain active over the long term requires not only individual effort but also a support system involving society as a whole.
Therefore, through collaboration with diverse stakeholders—including the media, the business sector, collectors, and gallerists—this program aims to create opportunities and establish a new cycle that supports culture.

◎ A grant system to support the activities of artists

At the Kawamura Cultural Foundation, we provide support in the form of assisting and subsidizing the activities of young artists in order to pass on and develop cultural arts.

Those who wish to receive assistance or support, please confirm the terms and conditions of the "Socially Engaged Art Support Grant System" before applying. Announcements about donors are also made on this site.
